Hey Dave, long time here as well. I stopped coming around because it got so dead. I guess I'm part of the problem. It just got so slow. Hope all of you guys are doing great and kill a monster this year. How is the zoo doing these days. Hope everything up your way is going good. ------------------ Blevins Gap Outdoors |

Hey Blevins. Really good to hear from you. OK, the Zoo. My wife died in 2006. I moved back to the Adirondack region of Upstate New York. I actually have to hunt for deer now. LOL I moved here in early 2007. I'm now a fly fishing fanatic and parttime hunter. LOL I recently returned from a nice fly fishing trip to Alaska. Heading out for fish Camp and salmon fishing off Lake Ontario in another month. Made 2 trips to Canada fishing this year. Otherwise.... I'm good. LOL I did manage to shoot a couple nice bucks last year. |

Dave,I'm really sorry to hear about your wife. Hope you are doing ok. It's good to hear that you are still out kicking around hunting and fishing. As long as you are out doing something that's all that matters. I have been out of circulation myself, had to have a fifth back surgery in 2007. Got some hardware and everything Have not been able to hunt much but have not quit either. Hope you have a good fishing trip and find the time to kill a deer or two. Good hunting to you all. p.s. Sorry to make the tears flow MS... ------------------ Blevins Gap Outdoors [This message has been edited by Blevins Gap Outdoors.. (edited September 23, 2009).] |

Hey Dave, you look like you did in the last picture I saw of yours even though you're getting older. I'm catching up with you I think, turning 58 in a couple weeks. Wow, that sure sounds old. The bucks not bad either. Like always you are putting them down. Hope to see a picture or two of this years kill. Not bad for not being in the zoo!!!------------------ Blevins Gap Outdoors |

I try. Our season opens tomorrow. It's suppose to rain...rain... and rain for 3 days. I'll seem what it's doing when I get up and decide. I haven't really prepared like I usually do other than shooting and tuning up the broadheads. I sliced the hell out of my thumb and am really hampered in climbing etc. I'm just going to go out, try and climb a tree and see what happens. Totally unplanned hunt coming up. The guy in the picture was number 86 with the bow. Today I spent dealing with our salmon club activities when I should have been preparing for the hunt. We're a private club reintroducing Atlantic salmon into a fishery and it's tributaries where they disappeared around 1900. THis year with our own money we stocked 55k little buggers. We've been doing it for 14 years or so. They're catching our fish over 2 feet now. I fed those little buggers for 4 months everyday. they were about 2 to 3 inches when we stocked this year. In 4 years they'll be 15-20. We've really had some great luck and some bad luck... but it's fun. No state money or any of that... A group of about 15 guys make it happen. Built our own hatchery, buy eggs from Maine and hatch them. It cost us, along with the VHS testing, about $4500 this year, not counting our own gas and misc. money buying this and that. Here's our website. Explore the different tabs and you'll see some neat stuff. http://www.fishcreeksalmon.org/ [This message has been edited by davidmil (edited September 26, 2009).] |

Hey Dave You are not alone with the poor weather . I was hoping to get out (Potsdam) today. Raining pretty good up here this morning. Hopefully it will slow down SOMETIME in the next few days. Where is this river you guys are working on? That's an excellent project. Doug |

Fish Creek and it's tributaries. We don't go far up the west branch of Fish Creek, but we cover the East Branch almost to it's beginning. Fish creek runs into Oneida Lake. They've caught our fish through the ice and in other creeks running into the lake as far over as Brewerton. This year we mainly stocked about the big dam on Swancutt Mill Resevoir. Those fish will live in the streams for 2 years and migrate to the resevoir when they're 8-10 inches. 2 years later they'll go back up stream to spawn. Swancutt Mill is deep and cold.... should be great for them. No power boats allowed so the fishing pressure is light. All they'll have to avoid are the jumbo browns and rainbows that lurk in there.I didn't go. It was pouring at 4,5,6 and through 11. About 12 I started to get ready and it started again. At 2 it let up... I started to dress and it started again and it's still raining. I've been flipping between golf and football. It sounds like you guys are having the same problem we are having here in Kentucky. This summer was the wettest I can remember. Now the fall looks like it will be to. When it rains it comes down in buckets. Have not seen the sun in a week. Hope all the deer don't drown...------------------ Blevins Gap Outdoors |

So I burned some tags. Today was the last day of our 4 day early bow season. During the early bow you get to fill any unused tags from last year. I had a doe tag from my 2008 Bow/Muzzleloader tags and my buck tag for firearms. It's been raining everyday.... too hard for me to want to bowhunt. Blood trails on marginal hits suck in the rain. It cleared up and stopped raining at noon. I was in my tree by 1:00. At 3:40 a small buck walked out. I ranged him and looked him over. I hung the bow back up. The little bugger probably didn't dress much over 100 pounds. At 4:55 a doe and a fawn come out on our food plot and feed across to me. 20 yards. I look the doe over and said, screw it. I'm not going through all the work for a 90 pound weakling. The doe wandered off a little nervous a couple minutes later. The fawn started to follow but came back. Finally about 5:40 I said screw it. I coughed...no movement from the fawn. Finally I said, "Hey, get out of here". Well he jumped a couple hops and looked for the noise. Then it started feeding again. I finally just stood up and started packing my gear. Finally the little bugger got nervous and highstepped out of there. On my way back to the truck I knock an arrow and am walking down the road through the woods to our food plot. Out pops a doe at 25 yards. Doesn't look, just walks out and starts feeding on the clover planted in the road. I raised the bow but didn't draw. I wondered if anything was behind her. When she turned away I stepped off the road. She looked but didn't seem to see me. I watched for a minute and said, I'm out of here. I stood up and stepped into the road. Off she went. Had a hawk attempt to catch me in the face while in the stand. I saw it sitting across the food plot for several minutes. I turned away and when I looked back he was coming full bore. I waved my arms and stood. It landed about 8 feet over my head. I turned and looked up. He'd had enough and was gone. LOL. Second time I've had one make a run at me. LOL It was nice to be back in the woods. You know, I don't care if I ever kill another deer. I still have venison in the freezer. If I need meat my buddy will donate one for the cause.

Hey guys, good to see some faimiar "faces". I too have been away a while, lost my job in June. Still unemployed, spending less time on the computer (sharing my wife's laptop). The only good thing about not working is I should have some extra time to hunt, was out for our opener (Oct 1) and hunted through the weekend. Didn't get any deer, but did pass on some doe shots and on a nice 120" 8pt. My fall turkey was not so lucky, shot a bearded hen on the opening afternoon, and also shot a big female coyote with the bow on Sunday. Was trying to line up some work for next week but that fell through today, so deer, look out. That was a nice buck David, hope you find a few more like him this year! |

Well, haven't been here in a long, long time. Sort of lost interest when the traffic slowed down so. All here in SE Alabama is well. Bagged a fat doe Saturday with my X-Bow. Before you guys hammer me, I have destroyed a left shoulder in a near fall about this time 2008 and cannot even break a 45# compound. Nothing has helped. Surgery next. My old tracking dog Tex is now 15 and I don't ask him to track anymore. I'm certain he would try hard but I doubt he could survive much of an effort. I have a new tracking dog, Mojo, that trained under Tex for 2 seasons ... but I miss my buddy being with me. I am dreading the inevitable. By the way I lucked into a fine 19 pointer on my 60th birthday last fall. Officially scored 180 1/2. Killed it while hunting on a friend's 2000 acre Texas goat farm. Good to read the posts. I'll try to stop by more often. God bless. |

Lights are still flickering, looks like.Hey, nothing wrong with the X-bow. A shoulder injury is a killer. I pulled my shoulder a bit and it took two years before the pain on the draw went away. Weather up here was too hot in Sept, now too wet. Finally took a doe for steaks last week with the ML. Butcher tomorrow. |

Don't know if anyone remembers me, but I happened to see a link to this site and remembered my log-in. I am sorry to hear about your wife davidmil. It's amazing that this forum still exists (no offense to anyone)with the low traffic and the multitude of other hunting sites on the web. Blessings to all.
