Went and sat in between the rain showers last night on a cut bean field and took the two does about 45 mins before dark. The one is about 140 and the other around 130. A couple big girls. Shot them both at around 90 yards the one drooped and the other went about 10 yards. |

There were 5 about the same size in the field.I shot 8 in one hunt does that count? It is on it's way tomorrow or Tuesday. Finally get to keep my feet planted for a couple weeks...just in time the show is getting ready to start. [This message has been edited by Charliep (edited November 01, 2009).] |

Larry, I have the optima pro. I was shooting 100 777 and a 223g powerbelt. I went to the Blackhorn 209 powder 110g with the 223g powerbelt. That was just a quick sight in, I'm going to mess with the load some and see if I can get better. |

That's what I just bought. I also use 110 grains of BH209, but with the Hornady 300 SST. It shoots really well for me. I will say that the Optima Pro feels like it kicks harder than my CVA Kodiak that I took to the hog hunt. Both are very accurate.------------------ Larry S. |

Since this seems to be a blackpowder discussion, I want to ask some of contributors here their opinions of Triple 7 powder as opposed to some I've seen mentioned in this thread. I bought a can of T7 several years ago and have just about used it up finally. Going to have to buy a new can of powder soon and have no idea of the new types out there. |

I tried T7 and got the crud ring so badly that I had to soak the barrel for days to get it out. I then went to Pyrodex and while it shot fine, it drew water more than T7 and rusted barrels quicker, like before I could get home that evening to clean it. Then I heard about Blackhorn 209 and tried it and will not change until something is "perfect". It cleans with a couple of patches of atandard rifle cleaner and I have left the rifle for a week or better without cleaning with no harmful effects. It is a little more expensive since it is 10 ounces instead of a pound, but 120 grains gets the same velocity as 150 of Pyrodex. Read the label, since it requires a solid breachplug and regular 209 primer. No, I don't work for them. I have not tried any of the American Pioneer powders. ------------------ Larry S. |

Bigdog..... I wouldn't worry too much about American pioneer or Shockey's Gold which is the same thing. If you think Pyro absorbs water, you ain't seen nothing until you've seen American Pioneer...........that stuff sux - literally, it sucks moisture out of the air like a sponge. I've had a jug literally go bad on me overnight - and that was when stored in climate-controlled conditions. Now it DOES shoot really clean, but it is also a bunch weaker than any other powder - about 30% weaker than 777 and a good 10% weaker than Pyro RS.tloyd - as to your question, the Blackhorn 209 that Bigdog mentioned is really the only "new" powder since 777, since American Pioneer, Shockey's, and even IMR's new "white sticks" are just new marketing gimmics for the old Clean Shot Powder and not "new" by any means. Blackhorn is truly more of a smokeless powder than any muzzleloading substitute. It cleans with standard centerfire cleaners and lubricants and leaves nowhere near the residue that any other powder does. It DOES require the use of 209 primers (which makes it off-limits to me as I'm still using #11 Caps) and is maybe 10% hotter than 777 - so you can use less powder per shot, which is good because it comes in smaller jugs and the price is WAY up there when you can find it. For now, I'm perfectly happy with my old Knight USAK using #11 caps and 777..........no crud ring and dime-sized groups are just too hard to argue against.
